For those whose lives aren't entirely overtaken by the dragon-type hobby: for most of history, Unova enforced a near-total ban on pokemon imports. The mountain ranges surrounding it separated populations of Unovan pokemon millions of years ago, and they diverged into new species native nowhere else on the planet. In the past few hundred years, trainers bringing and releasing foreign pokemon posed a risk to native 'mons. The import ban kept native Unovan ecosystems safe and stable.
It's not without its fair share of haters, though, especially among dragon-type trainers. While it protects the natural ecosystems of Unova, the policy severely restricts the local competitive scene. If a unovan trainer wants to build a high level competition-viable team, their only choice is to move away from their home region. I'm sure we've all seen the interviews by top-level trainers about how painful it was to leave their beloved pokemon behind in Galar or Kanto.
So, about the new bill. Basically, it introduces a new process by which trainers can register their non-native pokemon and bring them into the region, completely legally. This is a big change, and it could have big consequences. Yes, it would allow worldwide competitions to be hosted in Unova. Yes, it would introduce a brand-new risk for invasive released pokemon to establish populations here. The details of the bill haven't been released quite yet, I'll follow up with another post when they do drop. For now, I'd say the risk is too great. There would have to be plenty of protections in place to make sure foreign pokemon do NOT get released in large numbers. You'll also hear oldheads complaining about "regional identity" or some other shit like that, but I raise them this: Other regions have been importing since the beginning of time, and they're FINE.
TLDR: We just don't know enough yet!
